What: Through my interviews, I shall have at least 2 people with lack of a bandwidth connection at home because of the price of the internet. Because having internet is so expensive and a poor economic situation these people might not have access to the internet or they might have access to barely afford a connection

Since I was not in town this week, my 5 interviews are from the people of Miami, Florida.
Interview #1
My first interview was a very interesting one. I happen to be at the mall and I saw a woman at the food court that I could interview. Since I was interviewing someone in a public location I had to introduce myself properly this 35-year-old woman. The first question I asked was if she has an internet connection at home. She told me that she was one and that it costs her around $80 a month. I asked her if she ever struggled at paying for internet services and she told me that she did. She told me that she is the mother of 3 children that solely depend on her. She told me the now in days the internet is like a necessity since it keeps you connected to society. She also told me that it was a necessity because her children were still in school and having an internet connection is a must-have.

Interview # 2

My second interview was to a person that was with his family at a Cuban cafe restaurant. The first question I asked was if he had an internet connection at home. He told me that he had one but that he thought that prices were outrageous compared to services. He told me that he was paying Xfinity wireless for around $70. He told me that with that money he could be buying more stuff for his children. He also mentioned that his connection was pretty poor because he has a 10 MB speed connection for 5 people in his household. It is simply not enough.

Interview # 3

Of all my 5 interviews I found this one the most emotional one. I interviewed a lady that was sitting in the porch of his garage. I asked her if I could ask her some questions for a college assignment and she agreed. Again, I started by asking if she had an internet connection at home. She told me that she did not have the internet until recently. I asked her why and she told me that economic circumstances didn't allow her to have a connection at home. I asked her if her economic circumstances changed and she told me that nothing has changed. The only thing that has changed is that the school of her children was paying for her connection at home. This interview just proved my point on the first part of the assignment that some public schools may provide some students with a free internet connection at home.

Interview # 4

The interview was held when I was walking by the beach. I found a person doing some exercise and I ask him some questions. My first question was he had an internet connection at home. He told me that he was an internet connection at home, my second question was if he ever struggled to have an internet connection at home and he told me that he never has had an internet problem back home. I asked him why and he told me that his economic situation is pretty stable despite having a family of 2. Since he has never struggled with an internet connection I asked him if is connection speed is poor. He told me that sometimes his internet goes down but that he thinks that is a normal situation if it doesn't happen very often.

Interview # 5

My last interview was to a 35-year-old woman that was waiting for her car to get maintenance. The first question I asked her was if she ever struggled with a connection at home. She told me that she was not because she doesn’t have internet but because of the price. She told me that with $70 a month she could be buying a lot of stuff for her boyfriend. I also asked that if the internet speed she had at home was fast enough and she told me that the service was bad. She told me that her Internet connection was constantly not working and that when he tried to call her cable company they didn't fix anything for her.

What: At this point, I do see some differences on this opportunity. Some people just happen to have no internet connection at all and some people have a connection but the internet speeds are very poor.

Why: I believe this need is kind of different from the others. It all depends on the economic situation of a household. If someone can afford a decent internet connection they will not have trouble at all. But if someone has a family of 3 children or more and can barely pay the electric bills, of course, this will have an impact.

Inside the Boundary
Outside the Boundary
Who
Those people who cannot afford an internet connection at home because it is too expensive for them.
People who have a stable economic situation.
What
An internet connection at home
Those people who think there are no bandwidth issues in the U.S. because they think everybody can afford a connection.
Why
To help family households or college students to further expand their knowledge by allowing them to have an internet connection at home for educational purposes.
To help these people to have a connection speed that doesn’t go down all the time.

  1. David,
This is a very underrated problem going on in my experience, and im glad to see someone taking advantage of that opportunity and start trying to fix the problem. I need the internet everyday for all my school work, to contact friends and family, for my actual work information, and I need it right now in order to post this response. When prices for such a thing become unaffordable, it really does affect peoples lives. Great job also in making the best of the audience you had available to interview since you were out of town.

  2. Hey David,

That third interview was quite interesting as I still have yet to meet someone who has their internet paid off by their local public school. I definitely still intend to do more research on that when I get the chance to. The fourth interview was also pretty interesting as the person claimed that he never had a problem with his service but then later on admitted that it does go down sometimes. Regardless of his opinion that thats not a problem because it happens to everyone, it is very much a problem for everyone and that is more reason to get it fixed for everyone.
