What surprised me the most of this autobiography was carnegie was ethical is somehow. Most of the men who built america differ on this aspect. However, philanthropic activities like donating to people make him a sort of an ethical man to me. He also was a man that fought for world peace. What I did not like about him was that he did not paid his employees very well. He believed on a low wage system. In his journey, Carnegie encounter both success and failure. One of his huge success was his huge success with the steel business. He was one of the richest men in the world when he sold his business to JP Morgan for $400 million. His biggest failure in my opinion was the he could not achieve world peace. Which is something very difficult to do. However, after selling his steel business to JP Morgan, he was a philanthropist to he sought for this to happen during his last years and he failed.
His biggest competency was his charisma and caring for people. He was a man true believer of education . In his last years he donated more than $200 million to public schools and libraries. Another of his competencies was his cunning. He made some of this money through the stock market and fraud. He paid for share certificates by falsifying false unauthorized certificates from western union. He also tried to control stock prices . Even though these two activities are not ethical and legal, this is still a cunning competency in my opinion.
The most confusing part of the autobiography when Carnegie shows a different personality to the world. For example, sometimes he showed that he did not care how he made his money. To show this, he paid low wages to employers and also committed fraud. He controlled the stock market and he almost printed false western union certificates. On the other hand, he believed in peace and he also believed in education. Suddenly he was donating $200m to public schools . Situations like this make you doubt if Carnegie was a good person or a bad person.
The first question I would ask carnegie is why he sold his steel company to JP Morgan. I know that we wanted to be involved in philanthropic activities but if he waited just a little bit he could have earned more money. He had the biggest steel industry in the world. If he waited for 10 or 5 years he could have earned more than $400 or at least sell his company for a much higher price. The other question I would ask him if he thinks he contributions to education helped bolster education. I wish I could ask him this because he donated most of his fortune before dying. He always wanted to be rich and die poor. However, I’m not sure if he achieved his goals despite donating $200m+ to public schools and libraries.
Carnegie definition of entrepreneurship in my opinion is hard work.Carnegie was a man that was not born into a rich home. He had to work his way to the top. His first work was as a bobbin at a cotton factory. He also had a job a supervision superintendent at the railroad company he worked for. He is a man that worked through his entire life. Because of this when he was 35, he already had $1,000,000 in his pockets. I share this opinion because hard work pays of. I have seen the results of work can do. I have seen families in my life that were poor and then turned rich because of hard work. Carnegie was a true believer of persistence and work.
David,
ReplyDeleteThis is a very difficult person to analyze in my opinion just because he was so back and forth on his intentions and actions. I remember learning about him in United States History class in high school and he was more portrayed as a bad person who just underpaid workers and made a lot of his money illegally. However, I did hear he was involved in philanthropy and your reflection just proved that. I had no idea he was so giving for a long period of time and always had the goal of donating all the money to good things. I would say that even though he had some legal issues and what not, he had some good qualities about himself but it was also a different time so maybe it was just how he was raised and the world he grew up in that created some of those negative qualities.
