1. I feel that internet companies are always trying to get the most money they can and at the same time provide a really bad service.
2. Having a fast internet connection is getting very costly. Despite the cost, many times that service is
just not that good. Sometimes a person might be paying 70$ a month for an internet connection that
doesn’t works properly. According to the NY Times, America's internet speed and affordability are
falling behind (https://www.nytimes.com/2014/10/31/upshot/why-the-us-has-fallen-behind-in-internet-speed-and-affordability.html).

This opportunity is something that we college students are suffering day to today. We tend to use
internet everyday for school. Having a good internet connection now in days is a requirement if
someone goes to college. There is no way around it. In my opinion, at least 50% of college students
are having bandwidth problems at home.

Do you think america has bandwidth problems?
Yes, if you compare the amount we pay for a 10 mb internet connection, I say we do have problems.
A lot of people in America do not have access to the internet because of the high prices.

How often do you have bandwidth problems?
At least 5 times a month. Internet speed sometimes can be very slow and doing school work is
almost impossible with a bad internet connection. Sometimes I just don’t have internet at all.

How responsive is your cable company at assisting you when you have bandwidth problems?
When I give them a call regarding my internet issues, they are very responsive. The problem is that
they don’t fix anything. The only thing they do is give me excuses of why my internet is slow or why I
don’t have an internet connection. The most common excuse they give me is that because of high
demand, internet speeds are slow.

When was the first time you had bandwidth problems at home?
Since I was living at home with my parents. Internet has always been slow. Unless you pay $100+ for
a very good internet connection, you are going to see some slow speeds.

How can you get better bandwidth at home?
By giving more money to my internet provider!(he laughs)!
Reflection: I learned a lot from this interview. If someone lives at home and do not want to spend a
lot of money for an internet connection, internet connection might be very slow. One of the few ways
to solve these issues is to get a better internet plan your internet provider. This person has suffered
from bandwidth problems through his life. That was very surprising for me.

Do you think america has bandwidth problems?
Yes, I constantly hear this kind of problems from social media and newspapers. Many of my friends
that live off campus are always complaining because of the slow internet connections they have at
home.

Since I live on campus, I rarely have this kind of problems. Internet connection for me tends to be fast
and responsive. The only time I have a slow internet connection is when I go to Reitz Union to do
some school work.

Since I live on campus, I don’t have an internet provider. I guess I can say my internet provider is UF!
When was the first time you had bandwidth problems at home?
Like I said before, I have never had bandwidth problems while being in college. However, before
college, sometimes I had some slow speeds in my hometown. Though, it was not a common thing.
I guess I’m lucky or just happen to live in an area with good internet speeds.

Since I live on campus, there is not a lot I can do much about. Even if I had a slow internet connection
on my dorms, the only thing that I can do is to complain to the university.

Reflection: This interview was not very informative for me because I know what is like to live on

was that her friends were always telling her that their internet at home was pretty bad.

Do you think america has bandwidth problems?
No, I think that america has great internet connection speeds. Since I come from a country( Ecuador)
that has very poor internet connection, I feel that Americans have a good bandwidth. In my country,
connection speeds tend to be very slow. Sometimes the internet not even works at all. Since I moved
here, I’ve never had bandwidth problems.

How often do you have bandwidth problems?
Before living in the US, I had bandwidth problems very frequently. It was a very common thing for me
to lose my internet connection on Sundays afternoon! After moving to the US, bandwidth problems for
me are a thing of the past.

How responsive is your cable company at assisting you when you have bandwidth problems?
Back when I was living in Ecuador, they always said to me that they were going to come to my house
to check what was wrong with my internet. I remember them coming to my house at least 5 times to
check what was going on at my house. They never solved anything for me. They always said to me t
hat my internet connection is fine and that I shouldn’t have bandwidth problems anymore. I think they
were lying because the problems persisted. Now in days, I have no issues at all. I have never called
my internet service provider because of bandwidth problems.

I always had a slow internet connection speed at home. In Ecuador, that is a very common thing.
I think this is still happening because internet companies in my country don’t really care about what
their clients think. They just want the money.

There is not a lot I can do about it. The only thing that I can do is to complain with my internet provider. I’m very happy now because I don’t have bandwidth issues anymore.
Reflection: Of all my 3 interviews, this one is the one I enjoyed the most. I think it was because I was
very curious to learn how US internet speed compared with foreign internet speed. I learned a lot of
things from Ecuador that I didn’t know. What surprised me the most is that this person has never had
bandwidth problems since he arrived in the US.

Summary: After hearing out and asking questions on this interview, I have mixed feelings of ideas.
The person that has lived off campus through all his life told me that he always had poor internet
connection. Even when he was living at home with his parents. The person living on campus told be
that she never had issues with her internet speed. Not even before college. The third student told me
that he has never had bandwidth problems since he arrived in the US. I guess that when it comes to
bandwidth problems there are a lot of factors to consider. The zone someone lives and the price
someone pays for the service are 2 major factors.

Even though only 1 person out of the 3 had bandwidth problems , I still think America has bandwidth

of whether or not this opportunity exists. After this interview, I still think that this opportunity is a major
concern.

In this case, entrepreneurs cannot do much about it. Unless they spend some extra money on a
better internet connection. The most they can do is to call their providers and complain with them.
Maybe persistency will cause internet providers to give a better service.

I think this is a very interesting issue to write about, but I don’t think it’s as prominent as you think it is. The only time I ever hear about people having internet issues is if they’re in a public place or occasionally in student living organizations and those issues are generally caused by the amount of people using the network and the small amount of bandwidth available. I think your interviews asked some great questions, but I think you should have tailored them based on the interviewee’s previous response. For example, interview #2 was unhelpful information because your questions sort of triggered repetitive answers. Overall, I think you did well with this assignment, keep it up! :)
ReplyDeleteHey David,
ReplyDeleteI definitely agree with your stance on there being a problem with internet connection. Your challenging results may very well just be a case of asking those who don't use the internet as much as others and/or simply have a lower idea of what an acceptable bandwidth frequency is. As someone who uses the internet in a multitude of ways, I am among the many who feel like the internet service and charges that these providers offer are unacceptable.
